The most gratifying feeling I have for doing the Acne Control web site is from the e-mail I have received. By telling my story, I didn't know that I could help others who were as depressed as I was. There was a gentleman who wrote me while he should have been at work. He said he couldn't face himself and his colleagues with all the terrible breakouts. I am sure many of us have similar experience. I know I did.
Another girl shared with me her secret embarrassment for not being able to wear bathing suit for two years because her chest and back had breakouts along with large bumps on her face.
Sometimes, acne can be more than just embarrassment. A young woman wrote me that the acne that broke out mostly around her mouth and chin area were so painful that eating and smiling both caused her pain.
In addition to causing inconvenience and pain, acne can even be psychologically crippling. Dr Amanda Oakley and Dr John Collier have outlined in their article "Psychological Effects of Acne"
some of the more serious effects on acne sufferers, including behavioral problems, academic decline, social isolation, substance abuse, depression, even suicide*. Teenagers are more vulnerable in this respect because both acne and depressive disorder have a peak incidence during adolescence.
After reading about my experience, another young woman wrote that she felt better because she now knew that she was not the only one who felt as bad. "Like you said," the young woman continued, "I sometimes feel shy when I have to meet someone, or present my stuff in front of audiences. The worst thing is, I always try to hide my dark side anywhere during any occasion..." One thing "normal people" always have difficulty understanding is the profound effect of acne on the self-image and confidence of the sufferers.
Because acne is not a life-threatening disease, we won't get much sympathy when we complain aloud about it. Unfortunately for us, that's the way it is. It's human nature that we all care more about ourselves than others and, as a result, we are all guilty of not having enough understanding and sympathy of others' problems. A better understanding is always helpful and beneficial to all parties, acne or otherwise.
On the other hand, the reality is always a bit less unbearable than what we project it to be. People are never nearly as interested in our face as we are ourselves, or as we think they do. Realizing this may help reduce our agitation a bit. Of course, the final savior comes when our faces clear up. This will happen naturally to most acne sufferers, sooner or later. However, if you want it to be sooner, I am here to help, with the Acne Formula.
In the meantime, I want to let you know that you are not suffering alone, that there are a lot of people around the world sharing your similar experience. Knowing this is important. Knowing that we are not alone is important. Psychological damage is as real as the physical one, only it is not as revealing. On this page, we are going to share our experience and do some psychological cleansing together.
You are invited to write to us your feelings and experiences. Drop us a few lines and send them to: acne_experience@enaturalhealthcenter.com, and we'll put your story on this page. We would like you to tell your story in your own name, and with the city, country you are from. Please let us know if you want to do it anonymously.
*As I was preparing for this web site, a front-page story of a 24-year-old acne-suffering young woman who jumped to her death appeared in Hong Kong newspapers on 28 August 2000. The young woman had acne for 10 years, and had spent all her money on various kinds of acne treatments. The story continued to say that she did not take any picture of herself for the last few years, and had developed schizophrenia just before her death. She refused to clean and wash herself, told her mother that she looked horrible, until suddenly, she took her life. A tragic but true story.
